Last week was a very busy week for the children. They worked hard each day getting things ready in the room for Back to School Night. On Tuesday, they worked on their watermelon slices for the bulletin board. After completing the project they chose a plastic knife from the basket, looked at the number on it and cut out that number of seeds to put on their watermelons. They look fabulous on our board. They also painted a circle to look like the inside of a watermelon slice and put it together with their favorite summer memory. Displayed in bowls on the table they also look fantastic!
Wednesday brought the children to the pod where they were joined with their other first grade friends to hear the story If You Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Numeroff. The children made their own mice and wrote what they would give a mouse. We had some very creative ideas!
On Thursday, the children wrote a letter to you asking you to look at the many things they have done since school started. As a class we have been talking about school rules and classroom rules. Children have modeled for each other the way to come to the rug for Morning Meeting. They have learned many new greetings as we practice learning each other’s names. Our first assembly of the year took place on Friday morning with Mrs. Johnson leading the Belonging Assembly with kindergarten through second grade participating. The children later enjoyed a Fun Friday read aloud Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes and sequenced the story using pictures. Ask your child to tell you about the story while looking at their pictures.
This week in Math we have been working on addition number combinations for 6,7,8 and 9.
Scholastic Book Club flyers went home yesterday. Please look through the selections and if you would like to order you may do so on-line or you may fill out the order form and send it back to school with a check made out to Scholastic Reading Club. All orders are due by Friday, September 25th.
It was wonderful meeting so many of you last Thursday. I look forward to a great year with your children.
