October Letter

October 5, 2015

Dear Parents,
bluebirdIt’s hard to believe it is already October!  This letter is to update you on the many things that are happening in school.  Our theme for the month of October is Birds.  We will study birds in depth before going on our Field trip to the Franklin Park Zoo, which is on Thursday, October 22nd.  The Burlington Science Center will also present a bird show prior to our observations of birds at the zoo.  In class we will learn the attributes and features of some of the estimated 500 billion birds in the world.

The children have completed the first topic in Math which was Addition.  We are now working on Understanding Subtraction.  We have worked on finding the missing parts of 6,7,8 and 9 and are learning how to write number sentences.

Our reading groups are just about up and running.  The children are very enthusiastic about reading.  They will be working in small groups based on their instructional levels.  We are also doing shared reading.  We are working on Unit 2 in Fundations.  We are working on our second week of Spelling words.  Many of the children already can identify these words in shared reading, morning message and our poems.  These frequently used words often cannot be sounded out and need to be memorized.  Children need a lot of practice with these words in order to retain them.  Please keep on reviewing these words as they will help your child with all the reading we do.

Our author for this month is Lois Ehlert.  She has many wonderful books that I will be reading to the children.

Kevin Henkes, (our September author) was a big hit.  Be sure to check out his books when visiting the library.

Thank you to everyone who sent back the field trip forms.  I will let you know if  you have been picked as a chaperone as soon as all forms are in.  Permission slips are due back on Friday, October 9th.
